Sorry for the long post - must have been the beer.

...love some of the mixing and studio work on old Beatles stuff; the instruments are very distinctly placed and somehow the voices came right through all of it.

You touched a little on marketing or self-promotion, and I think that's a huge piece of who makes it (financially) in the mega buck pop world. And appearance is huge.

I like an artist based on what they produce, not because I think I can judge their talent, but because of how I feel when I listen or watch their work. However if he or she is a dick, I don't like their work as much. ...kinda like Mel Gibson morphing into a raving psychopath – I won’t go to see anything he does today.

JSFD for the micing of the podcast, we pretty much do it the same way but much less controlled. With a singer we want to get the singer in as much the right position as possible, but with podcasting, it doesn't really matter all that much.

There are far too many studios to count these days. This is mostly because of the digital revolution. While there are many professional based studios, there are probably even more home studios these days. Many of them can probably get a decent sound. As far as categories of recording studios, i can remember when it was based on track count, but nowadays track count is pretty much a non issue. This again is because of the digital revolution.

Thanks for you comments on the "debate." I agree with you 100 percent. If we can ever be a reason to drink for even one person, we would have reached our goal. Don't drink and drive though.

Ah, an excuse to find a beer in the fridge - thanks guys! ;-)

re: Don Ho / Nathan Aweau - I thought NA was DH's music director for some period, no?

...how differently do you mic for the podcast with you and the Icon speaking, verses a vocal track for singer (singing a song)?

How are recording studios categorized? ...by the size of the physical space to hold the artists, by the amount of tracks you can mix, cost of sessions and services offered, etc? Any idea how many music recording facilities in Hawai'i?

Loved the 'debate', there's a lot more there too. I look forward to listening to more convo between you two. The deal is (in my humble opinion) it's all subjective, and with personal interjection. I've never heard of any rating system that charts and graphs any artist's talent. In fact, if you can't define the components which we 'think' make up talent, then how you can even measure it? It's all about data. And speaking of data, the person doing the critiquing would have to be qualified to provide flat, non-biased opinions too.

So the bottom line is that I think a person ends up injecting personal opinion, mixed with maybe popular opinion, and if you have technical abilities you may be able to point out high and low points, but it's still super subjective. It’s wonderful to hear both of you guys discuss this topic; I hope you do more.

I'm just grateful to find Hawaiian music - it's a whole new thing for me, so I'm just a happy guy!

Gawd I’ve got a buzz – gotta sign off for now…
