PupuPlayer PRO

Here’s a question for you. What happens when you get 3 of the greatest podcasters in the world together in one room? Well, you won’t find the answer here folks. On this program, Dr. Trey and The Icon are once again joined by V. Brown of 808talk. Well, he claims it’s 808 (the area code for Hawaii) but does he really live here? That is a question we try to answer with this one. For the record, meebo has a chatroom now, so we’re going to use it for the live shows. Also, if you want to get notified when we’re doing a live show, jump on twitter and get text messages sent to your phone informing you of this.

  1. MAKENA-Siena & Toast Says:

Aloha from the “Lesbos” in California! ;-)
    Funny, your show!

  2. Hekili Says:

    Oh snap!

  3. Dr. Trey Says:

If you liked that you’re gonna just love the show where we play your music. Thanks for being good sports.

  4. JFSD Says:

I love Makena, and even have their latest CD, AND they put a personal Thank You note inside… (thank you Makena!)

…hopefully I’ll get up to their neck of the woods and her/see them perform live (I just don’t like to fight traffic and LA is gridlock).

@Dr. Trey: Do you think it hurts or helps a musician’s career if they are open about their sexuality? Actors seem to be heavily closeted, I’m thinking/guessing maybe musicians are different. What’s your Trey-mendous spin (or not)?

  5. Dr. Trey Says:

JSFD: That is a great question. Your brain seems like it thinks harder about things now that you’re not watching television. Ok, so let me start by saying that I haven’t heard the Makena CD yet. To be honest, I didn’t think I would like it but hey, I’m open minded. It seems that more people like the project than don’t. I will not be one to shy away from expressing my own opinion and right now I can honestly tell you that what I’ve heard of them, I really don’t care for. We do play a song from them on the next episode of our show. If you all can honestly tell me that it’s good stuff, then I’ll know I’ve lost touch with what the listening public considers to be good.

As for having an unorthodox preference in sexuality and whether a musician should express it or not, I would say why not express it? There’s nothing wrong with it. In the past I think it did hurt sales, but these days, the public is more educated. I work with clients that have different sexual preferences even to this very day, and in most cases they are not afraid to share their thoughts on the subject. If anything I do admire them for standing up for what they believe in.

  6. Kimo Says:

I think it depends, but in Makena’s case I think that it’s probably helped. What do you think Siena & Toast?

  7. JFSD Says:

@Dr. Trey: Thinking harder or over analyzing? (grin) It’s really something when I get all 3 of my brain cells running at the same time! And as far as what’s good (or not), mine is one opinion.

I think the way Siena and Toast’s voices harmonize is sweet. Their style is clean, acoustic and just seems honest (don’t ask me to define what honest sounds like). I’m big on acoustic here lately.

Their songs I Won’t Shed a Tear, That’s Why I Keep Going On, and Nobody Else is like coffee-house, folk and a little pop - it works for me… It feels California (if there is such a sound). Good Enough kinda hits you like a hook song (upbeat).

PS: I went to a Luau in the town of Makena (Maui) in 2004 and got my first taste of local music of which I really liked. The comedian, well, no so much… The bus driver was totally cool; he talked on the bus on the way to Makena from Kahului Bay of famous Hawaiian battles and places.

@Kimo: I think it may have helped too at least with the Gay community, which is been traditionally small but vocal. PS: iTunes is running and your E Ku’u Morning Dew 4 is playing in my Hawai’i playlist - serendipitous! Don’t tell Bran; he’ll rip me for that word…

  8. Ipo of Gomega Says:

What who said that Davey D is a good person????????????? Wow Bran calling out Melveen Leed!!!!! You got some balls! LOL! =Ipo=

  9. Dr. Trey Says:

I do believe that Davey D is a good person. To be honest, I may be in the minority, and Ipo, you know how much I love your spirit, but I don’t believe that Dave should the the scapegoat of the Hawaii music industry. His hands are tied most of the time by the company he works for.
