The new HARA

Posted in Hawaii Music Industry, There I Said It on May 21st, 2010 by Dr. Trey

John Berger of the Honolulu starbulletin wrote a brilliant article in today’s paper exposing the machine that is known as the Hawaii academy of recording arts. When I say machine, I am referring to something that is generally predictible and will normally do what you expect it to do. He suggests that based on previous winners, we can expect more of the same at this years Nā HōkÅ« Hanohano awards ceremony. Amy Hanaiali‘i and Uluwehi Guerreo are both his predictions to win big.

Thank you Mr. Berger! When will it be time to bring new talent into the scene? When will HARA realize that in order for Hawaiian music to live, we need the youth of Hawai‘i to know that they can be recognized? When will HARA realize that we are tired of seeing the same performances by the same people every year? When will HARA realize that we really don’t give a crap that it’s in HD this year but great content is a must? When will HARA realize that teaming up with a group of people with the same old school mentality as the machine itself will not allow our precious hawaiian music to flourish?

We are in turbulent times my friends. Hawaiian music is on shaky ground and we need something to change soon. The youth needs you HARA. When I speak to HARA I am referring to the membership as a whole. The machine must be destroyed and progress restored.

In all fairness, I realize that HARA is making their best efforts to try to keep Hawaiian music alive, but is it working? This years awards will tell us where we are going and how we are doing.

So I say this to the younger generation of musicians. Get off your lazy asses and become a part of HARA. Participate! Go to the awards ceremony and to the workshops on the 28th and 29th. Believe it or not, HARA is in the control of the musicians.

By the way how many times have we seen Amy perform? I think that collectivly we can all predict her wardrobe this year. Let just hope it’s not what she wore at the Grammys.
There I said it!

Mana maoli collective concert series

Posted in Hawaii Music Industry on May 6th, 2010 by Dr. Trey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 6, 2010

THE MANA MAOLI COLLECTIVE MAY CONCERT SERIES

Honolulu, HI – Returning home from a 3-week tour in Aotearoa (New Zealand), the Mana Maoli Collective (MMC) has planned a May concert series consisting of four music and hula performances across three Hawaiian islands – O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai’i. Proceeds from the concerts will go to Na Lei Na’auao, an alliance of 12 Hawaiian culture, community and environment-based charter schools.

The MMC hosted workshops and performed in nearly 2 dozen shows across 5 cities in Aotearoa. The impetus for the tour was the 18th Annual Pasifika Festival, which attracts over a quarter million people annually from dozens of nations in the Pacific. The MMC had the honor of being the first group of Hawaiians to represent traditional and modern music and dance at this festival, as the headline act on the main “international” stage.

The MMC is a new generation of local Hawaiian music. Ranging from seasoned veterans and living legends, to underground and adolescent prodigies, the MMC includes hundreds of artists. Representing the MMC at one or more performances in the May Concert series, as one all-star band taking turns in lead and backup roles – John Cruz, Anuhea Jenkins, Paula Fuga, Boom Gaspar of Pearl Jam, Wayne Enos of Natural Vibrations, Kapali Keahi of Lahaina Grown, Moku of 4Fathers, Shane Veincent of Sudden Rush, Grant Ka’au’a of Mixjah, CJ of HI-town and Lopaka Colon. Joining the lineup will be MMC hula dancers, youth talent from various charter schools, Natural Vibrations, Ernie Cruz, Jr, Guy Cruz, Damon Williams, Candy Diaz, and many more.

Do not miss out on a collaborative performance this rare. The unique styles and sounds of these artists form an innovative weave of what we call Maoli Music – from traditional Hawaiian to contemporary, jazz to reggae, and blues to hip-hop.

The dates and venues are as follows:
• Friday, May 21st, 5p – 1130p at WAI’s lounge in Hilo (Mana Maoli begins at 9:30p)
• Saturday, May 22nd, 12p – 5p at The Mixx Bistro in Kona, and online at livehawaiianmusic.com
• Thursday, May 27th, 6p – 2a at Fresh Café in Honolulu (dozens of musicians/bands, as well as hula and youth talent from Hawaiian Charter Schools)
• Saturday, May 29th, 9:45p – 1a at Casanova’s in Makawao

For more information on the Mana Maoli Collective, or if you are interested in supporting Mana Maoli, contact Keola Nakanishi at 808-295-MANA (808-295-6262) or keolanakanishi@yahoo.com.

Mana Maoli, a non-profit 501(c)(3) formed in 1999, created three programs – Halau Ku Mana, a Hawaiian culture-based charter school, Kanehunamoku, a traditional voyaging canoe program, and Maoli Music to achieve its vision of community-based education and awareness, pooling and sharing of resources, and sustainability in regards to the environment, economy and community.

Festival Chair, Bobbie Martel explains, “Malama i ka ‘aina, taking care of the land, ensures that she will take care of us. Sustainability is critically important for us as individuals and communities. We hope the Festival offers a legacy to our keiki and future generations to do the same.”

Martel, program coordinator for Leeward CC’s Associate in Arts in Education program, is linking the Festival’s hands-on and reading activities to the Leeward students studying to become teachers. Ka Mole o Na Pua Festival embraces the vision of a sustainable future. Mailani at Aku Bone Lounge

The well known fish bone sign

Just wanted to make a little announcement letting you all know that Mailani will be performing at the infamous Aku Bone Lounge every Monday night for the remainder of the month of September.  Driving down Pensacola street on the way to Ala Moana I’m sure you’ve seen their well known fish bone sign. Aku Bone Lounge is known for their delicious menu items at affordable prices along with great Hawaiian music every night.  It’s become the Hot Spot to see top Hawaiian music acts.  On Mondays, the entertainment begins at 8 and runs through to 10pm.  FYI this month will be your last opportunity to see Funkmastah Frank Carillo play bass with Mailani as he and his wife will be moving to Kaua’i next month.  They will be missed.

As Mailani has released a well publicized Hawaiian music album earlier this year, we have long waited for the opportunity to perform in such a place.  Please come down and join us if you have the chance.  If you’re wondering what to eat, there’s never a bad to for Moi and the steamed moi at Aku Bone is fantastic!

Their address is:

Aku Bone Lounge & Grill

The year so far

Posted in Hawaii Music Industry, Music on September 8th, 2009 by Dr. Trey

I must say, it’s never easy to predict what will happen throughout the year and this year was no exception. Mailani and I have been working hard thusfar to get her music out there. What we didn’t expect was the schedule that comes along with the Mayhem.

Both Mailani and I have worked in the industry before but never have we had the opportunity to work with such a well oiled Machine such as the Mountain Apple Company. Working is one thing but with their guidance we have learned how to effectively work.

If you have yet to come to one of mailani’s gigs, please do stop by one of these days. She has turned her gigs into a show of the highest caliber. With stage musicians such as Seann Carroll, Shawn Ishimoto, Frank Carillo and of course Jon Porlas we can honestly say that the music has stepped up.

Please be sure to check out mailani’s gig schedule and join us if you have the chance.

Mailani’s solo debut album in stores now

Posted in DoctorTrey.com News, Hawaii Music Industry, Music on July 8th, 2009 by Dr. Trey

I know I’m late with this entry and at the same time I’m well aware that I haven’t posted anything in awhile. So why now? Well I actually feel as though this is something worth posting.
I’ve been proud of the work I’ve done in the past as a producer and engineer, but this project simply called Mailani is something that I can say that yes I’m proud of but also very passionate of.

Mailani and I have planned this project for a few years now. Our intention was and continues to be to bridge the gap of multiple generations by introducing what I believe to be a new generation of Hawaiian music. Mailani, always the risk taker, wanted give of herself as a musician, songwriter, performer and as a passionate Hawaiian woman. She delivers.

This album, as thought out as it was, still oozes of personality. I still remember our first meeting with Jon Demello and Leah Bernstein when I told them that I wanted to bottle her personality and show the world what’s great about her. Well, I can humbly say that I believe this album does just that.

If you haven’t heard the album yet, go check it out. Head over to mountain apple companyand take a listen to 2 of her songs, check out the beautiful photos available for viewing. Mountain Apple has helped us realize our goal with graphics that have done more than compliment my favorite singers brand new music. Also for Mailani’s schedule updates that’s the website to continuously visit.

Thank you for your continued visits to Doctortrey.com.

ItÊ»s been awhile since I’ve updated but I feel that this is important news regarding innovative ways in which to market your music. As members of the HawaiÊ»i music industry, we have tried to find ways to beat the downturn of our marketplace. With distribution companies closing down, stores downsizing their floor area for music and blank CD sales soaring, we can only wonder if there’s any hope at all. We’ve been hit hard by a Tower Recordsless market. Many have been complaining about the burning illegal copying and downloading of CDs and saying that we need to somehow stop them. By this point, I think we all realize that stopping them may be impossible. Here’s where HawaiÊ»i Podcamp, which happens on October 24th at the HawaiÊ»i Convention Center, comes into play

I’m not prepared to say that this is the answer to all our problems as an industry, but I will say that if all we do is complain nothing will happen for us. It’s time to search for the solutions and Podcamp could be a huge step in the right direction. Remember that the “World Wide Web” is truly world wide, and the folks that will be at podcamp are people that will be able to get your music out to the world. It’s time to consider your options. Do you continue to fight the losing battle or do you find new avenues to present your music? They (HawaiÊ»i Podcamp) are also looking for people who would be willing to entertain their guests from around the globe and from HawaiÊ»i Nei. It can’t hurt to have people talking about you on their Blogs, Podcasts, and Vid/Vodcasts. Best of all Its all free. The internet has been both bad and good for the industry. This is one of the good things. Please don’t miss this opportunity.
