John Berger of the Honolulu starbulletin wrote a brilliant article in today’s paper exposing the machine that is known as the Hawaii academy of recording arts. When I say machine, I am referring to something that is generally predictible and will normally do what you expect it to do. He suggests that based on previous winners, we can expect more of the same at this years Nā HōkÅ« Hanohano awards ceremony. Amy Hanaiali‘i and Uluwehi Guerreo are both his predictions to win big.

Thank you Mr. Berger! When will it be time to bring new talent into the scene? When will HARA realize that in order for Hawaiian music to live, we need the youth of Hawai‘i to know that they can be recognized? When will HARA realize that we are tired of seeing the same performances by the same people every year? When will HARA realize that we really don’t give a crap that it’s in HD this year but great content is a must? When will HARA realize that teaming up with a group of people with the same old school mentality as the machine itself will not allow our precious hawaiian music to flourish?

We are in turbulent times my friends. Hawaiian music is on shaky ground and we need something to change soon. The youth needs you HARA. When I speak to HARA I am referring to the membership as a whole. The machine must be destroyed and progress restored.

In all fairness, I realize that HARA is making their best efforts to try to keep Hawaiian music alive, but is it working? This years awards will tell us where we are going and how we are doing.

So I say this to the younger generation of musicians. Get off your lazy asses and become a part of HARA. Participate! Go to the awards ceremony and to the workshops on the 28th and 29th. Believe it or not, HARA is in the control of the musicians.

By the way how many times have we seen Amy perform? I think that collectivly we can all predict her wardrobe this year. Let just hope it’s not what she wore at the Grammys.
There I said it!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 6, 2010

THE MANA MAOLI COLLECTIVE MAY CONCERT SERIES

Honolulu, HI – Returning home from a 3-week tour in Aotearoa (New Zealand), the Mana Maoli Collective (MMC) has planned a May concert series consisting of four music and hula performances across three Hawaiian islands – O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai’i. Proceeds from the concerts will go to Na Lei Na’auao, an alliance of 12 Hawaiian culture, community and environment-based charter schools.

The MMC hosted workshops and performed in nearly 2 dozen shows across 5 cities in Aotearoa. The impetus for the tour was the 18th Annual Pasifika Festival, which attracts over a quarter million people annually from dozens of nations in the Pacific. The MMC had the honor of being the first group of Hawaiians to represent traditional and modern music and dance at this festival, as the headline act on the main “international” stage.

The MMC is a new generation of local Hawaiian music. Ranging from seasoned veterans and living legends, to underground and adolescent prodigies, the MMC includes hundreds of artists. Representing the MMC at one or more performances in the May Concert series, as one all-star band taking turns in lead and backup roles – John Cruz, Anuhea Jenkins, Paula Fuga, Boom Gaspar of Pearl Jam, Wayne Enos of Natural Vibrations, Kapali Keahi of Lahaina Grown, Moku of 4Fathers, Shane Veincent of Sudden Rush, Grant Ka’au’a of Mixjah, CJ of HI-town and Lopaka Colon. Joining the lineup will be MMC hula dancers, youth talent from various charter schools, Natural Vibrations, Ernie Cruz, Jr, Guy Cruz, Damon Williams, Candy Diaz, and many more.

Do not miss out on a collaborative performance this rare. The unique styles and sounds of these artists form an innovative weave of what we call Maoli Music – from traditional Hawaiian to contemporary, jazz to reggae, and blues to hip-hop.

The dates and venues are as follows:
• Friday, May 21st, 5p – 1130p at WAI’s lounge in Hilo (Mana Maoli begins at 9:30p)
• Saturday, May 22nd, 12p – 5p at The Mixx Bistro in Kona, and online at livehawaiianmusic.com
• Thursday, May 27th, 6p – 2a at Fresh Café in Honolulu (dozens of musicians/bands, as well as hula and youth talent from Hawaiian Charter Schools)
• Saturday, May 29th, 9:45p – 1a at Casanova’s in Makawao

For more information on the Mana Maoli Collective, or if you are interested in supporting Mana Maoli, contact Keola Nakanishi at 808-295-MANA (808-295-6262) or keolanakanishi@yahoo.com.

Mana Maoli, a non-profit 501(c)(3) formed in 1999, created three programs – Halau Ku Mana, a Hawaiian culture-based charter school, Kanehunamoku, a traditional voyaging canoe program, and Maoli Music to achieve its vision of community-based education and awareness, pooling and sharing of resources, and sustainability in regards to the environment, economy and community.

As the main root nurtures the plant, the intent of the Festival is to educate and engage young people in taking care of our environment.

Festival Chair, Bobbie Martel explains, “Malama i ka ‘aina, taking care of the land, ensures that she will take care of us. Sustainability is critically important for us as individuals and communities. We hope the Festival offers a legacy to our keiki and future generations to do the same.”

Martel, program coordinator for Leeward CC’s Associate in Arts in Education program, is linking the Festival’s hands-on and reading activities to the Leeward students studying to become teachers. Ka Mole o Na Pua Festival embraces the vision of a sustainable future. The performances and activities will cultivate a greater awareness and sensitivity to both island and global inter-dependencies.

These are great times for the ‘ukulele. With Jake leading the way the instrument is gaining popularity accross the globe. Of course everyone out there knows about his playing for the queen but now Ima surprise announcement, Jake has aided in the design af a new soprano size ‘ukulele by Takamine guitars. Wow! The specs sound great including the rosewood fingerboard and mahogany instrument. The only thing I am curious about is the 14 fret neck which in my opinion would subtract from it’s already smaller sound considering it’s size. Although I love the fact that this instrument is going global, I do wish he somehow included a local ‘ukulele maker to further bring recognition to the Hawai‘i ‘ukulele community.

Congratulations Jake! Keep up the good work and keep making us proud.
